You know that you want to make some money online, but do you know how or where? You need to find a niche so your business has the best chance of working. But how do you find it?
Helen Lindop of Business plus Baby has spent many years researching and finding her niche and here is why she thinks it is important to find you niche.
“You do not have the time or the money to reach out to a wide range of buyers, so you need your promotional activities to be focused in one place. ‘Niching’ can be scary, though. It is tempting to try to be all things to all people because you do not want to lose customers. The trouble with this is that if you do not know exactly who your customers are, you can’t go to the places they hang out. And you can’t explain to them that you have got a fab new widget that will solve a pressing problem of theirs. Having a niche does not mean you have to turn other people away. Your niche is the focus of your promotional efforts rather than a strict rule about who you can sell to. ”
So how will you find your niche?
I bet the first thought you had was to find a big niche such as ‘weight loss’ as there will be lots of searches for this term but it can be really hard to make an impact on such a large market no matter how many searches there are. You need to find a smaller more focused niche where you will be able to rank of the first page when people are searching for your services or product. A great tool to help you with this is the Google Keyword Tool. This is great for key word research.
The results will vary if you are or aren’t logged in and will give you a guide as to the volume of searches of those phrases and key words along with the amount of competition you will have for those words.
Set aside some time and try out the keyword tool and see if you can find a niche to start your business in.
